Reported sightings of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) and extraterrestrial encounters have persisted for many decades. These reports, from multiple countries, are often submitted by credible individuals, pilots, law enforcement and military personnel. Several of these UFOs have been tracked by radar stations. Common to many of these reports are detailed descriptions of the incomprehensible speed and agility exhibited by these craft. In the 50s and 60s, our government conducted official inquiries into the UFO phenomenon but eventually it either stopped investigating UFOs or stopped confirming their investigations. When a UFO sighting is reported, authorities usually explain it as a weather balloon, swamp gas, air inversion layer, or an experimental aircraft or rocket. Many believe these explanations account for only a portion of UFO sightings.

For several days and nights in 1952, military jets were unsuccessfully dispatched to intercept a number UFO’s observed and tracked over Washington DC. A 1980 Suffolk, England incident involved the alleged landing of one or more craft of unknown origin during the course of two nights in Rendlesham Forest. But perhaps the most famous UFO incident occurred in 1947 when a UFO allegedly crashed during a severe thunderstorm near Roswell, New Mexico. After examining the wreckage, military officers from Roswell Army Air Field issued a press release notifying the country that the Army had found the remains of a crashed flying saucer. This announcement was soon retracted and the wreckage was then described as a weather balloon. Strong speculation persists that that our government has performed autopsies on Roswell extraterrestrials and reverse engineered their spacecraft in an attempt to reveal secrets of alien technology. Roswell’s Area 51, Ohio’s Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and Carswell Air Force Base in Texas are the installations where many believe these examinations were conducted. Several former military contractors and servicemembers claim to have seen UFO wreckage and deceased extraterrestrials at these locations.

More recently, over the course of several days in 2004, a Navy warship’s state-of-the-art radar tracked mysterious targets descending from high altitudes at extreme speeds, and then dispatched two jet fighters to intercept them. Just above an area of roiling whitewater amid an otherwise calm sea, four naval aviators observed a strange object with no wings, control surfaces or means of propulsion maneuvering in jaw-dropping ways. The mysterious craft then darted off at extraordinary speeds as a Top Gun-trained squadron commander chased it. The apparent physics- and aerodynamics-defying performance left the stunned aircrew believing that the object “was not from this world.” For several days in 2014 and 2015, at least 50 naval aviators flying off the East Coast observed unknown craft exhibiting extraordinary capabilities. In 2022, an ex-fighter pilot with nearly four decades of flight experience reported an alarming incident in the same area as the 2004 encounter.

The Pentagon has recently released an extraordinary academic paper that claims some recent UFOs could actually be alien probes from a mothership sent to study Earth. The paper explains that interstellar objects such as the cigar-shaped “Oumuamua” that scientists spotted flying through the galaxy in 2017 “could potentially be a parent craft that releases many small probes during its close passage to Earth.” Critics say our government does not have the right to keep evidence of extraterrestrial life from us.

Mission: The scientific study of UFOs for the benefit of humanity. MUFON’s goals are to investigate UFO sightings and collect the data in the MUFON Database for use by researchers worldwide, promote research on UFOs to discover the true nature of the phenomenon, with an eye towards scientific breakthroughs, and improving life on our planet, and educate the public on the UFO phenomenon and its potential impact on society. Field investigators apply the scientific method of investigation in the following manner: we establish a hypothesis, then set out to prove or disprove the hypothesis. Our hypothesis is “this event can be explained rationally”, and we set out to PROVE it. Sometimes we need to consult with experts in order to find the necessary proof. In the end, we succeed in proving this hypothesis 95% of the time. About 2-3% of the cases are truly unexplained, and that is not a trivial conclusion, since 2-3% of thousands of cases a year worldwide is a significant number of unexplained events. The scientific conclusion from this data is that there are unexplained events in our world that are genuinely worthy of further scientific investigation.
